What is Inline Hockey?

Inline hockey is known to many people as a version of Ice Hockey, played on inline skates. Teams are generally made up of about 14 players, with four players and a netminder on the pitch at any one time.

The game is non-checking (not non-contact!) which means that unlike ice hockey, you are NOT allowed to intentionally body-check an opponent.

Inline Hockey can be played anywhere there is a flat, smooth surface. This includes sports halls, play grounds and purpose built Inline Hockey venues, such as those at Deeside and Derby.

In indoor arenas with a smooth floor, the game is played with a puck, but outside the game can also be played with a ball.

To play inline hockey competitively you need to wear protective equipment. For a player this means: helmet, elbow pads, padded gloves, a team shirt, padded shorts, a cup (or box), leg guards, hockey socks and skates. If you are a netminder you will need to have body armour, netminders leg pads and catching and blocking gloves.

(FIHL) Hockey Inline uses the IIHF (Inline) rulebook, which is widely based on the Ice-Hockey Rulebook, with subtle differences, such as no checking and a centreline offside rule.
